Degrowth proposals from the North: energy sovereignity – Pablo Cotarelo (Ecologists in Action)

Monday 13th July, 12.00-13-30 – Cerbère (France)

Energy sovereignty is the right of conscious individuals, communities and peoples tomake their own decisions regarding the generation, distribution and consumption of energy, so that these are appropriate totheir ecological, social, economic and cultural circumstances, always it does not adversely affect others.

This definitionis fairly common to all social movements that seek to transform an increasingly global energy model, and so unfair and aggressive as the economic system that sustains. The real challenge of our times, and all the times that have had to endure this energy model, is to transfer the necessary plans to move the current and constantly changing reality to meet the desired future scenarios.

In the last two years in Catalonia a social movement has been leading the analysis, study, reflection and the elaboration of concrete proposals to move towards energy sovereignty of the people of its territory. In this session of the Summer school on degrowth and environmental justice we will work toreflect on the approach and working methods of this network of people and different social groups, and explore the possibilities to apply it in other regions.
